Chlorophyll itself isn't absorbed intact the way vitamins are. What research has focused on is chlorophyll's derivatives, particularly chlorophyllin (a semi-synthetic, water-soluble form used in some clinical studies), and its potential role in binding certain compounds in the digestive tract. Some laboratory and animal research has examined chlorophyll's antioxidant properties and its interaction with carcinogenic compounds, though this research is still considered preliminary when it comes to direct human clinical outcomes.
What's better established is chlorophyll's antioxidant capacity. Chlorophyll is genuinely one of the more interesting compounds in the algae conversation, both because of its unique role in photosynthesis and its antioxidant properties. But it's important to separate what's well-established (antioxidant capacity, extremely high concentration in chlorella specifically) from what's still emerging (specific detox and binding claims, which we'll cover with appropriate nuance in week 17). Chlorella earns its reputation as a chlorophyll powerhouse. The rest of the story deserves the same careful, source-checked treatment.
