What it is

The Musical Spine® is a technique created by French composer and sound researcher Fabien Maman. It pairs precisely tuned Classical Tuning Forks® with Color Light® along the spine, following the same pathway used in Chinese medicine.

With more than 20 years in Chinese medicine and a background in hypnotherapy, Dr. Antonika Chanel brings a practitioner's eye to every session. It is calm, simple, and deeply relaxing.

How it's practiced

You rest face down while the tuning forks are struck and placed, one pair at a time, on specific points along both sides of the spine. Each pair is tuned to a precise musical interval, so the vibration travels into the tissue and the sound fills the space around you at the same time.

The points follow the Bladder channel, the energy pathway that runs from the base of the skull down the back. The intervals are chosen to match the season and the organ system being addressed. Once the sound work is done, color light is guided along the same points to layer a second, softer frequency over the first. The session closes with stillness so your system can absorb it.

The spine through a Chinese medicine lens

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the back is the yang side of the body. It's where we hold protection, posture, and everything we carry. Two major pathways meet here.

The Governing Vessel

Runs straight up the center of the spine. It's called the "Sea of Yang" and is seen as the channel that directs the yang energy of the whole body, including warmth, drive, and alertness.

The Bladder Channel

Runs in two parallel lines on each side of the spine. It's the longest channel in the body and part of the Tai Yang, the outermost layer of defense. It's also the one channel that holds a direct access point for every organ system.

That is why the Musical Spine works along the Bladder channel. One pass down the back reaches every organ system in a single session.

What are the Back Shu points?

"Shu" means to transport. The Back Shu points sit on the inner line of the Bladder channel, about two finger widths from the spine, and each one lines up with a specific organ. In TCM theory, this is where the qi of each organ gathers and flows to the surface of the back, which makes these points a direct line to the organ itself.

Practitioners use them in three ways:

  • To read the body. Tenderness, tightness, or a feeling of emptiness at a Back Shu point can signal imbalance in the organ it belongs to.
  • To support deeper, long standing patterns. Because they connect straight to the organs, these points are traditionally used for chronic imbalances and to strengthen depleted systems.
  • To restore balance between front and back. Each Back Shu point pairs with a Front Mu point on the abdomen. The back holds the yang, the front holds the yin, and working both brings the organ back into harmony.

The outer line: where the spirit lives

Further out from the spine, the outer line of the Bladder channel holds points named for the five spirits of Chinese medicine. Each sits right beside its organ's Back Shu point. This is where TCM connects the body to emotion and memory, and it's a big part of why this work can feel emotional as well as physical.

What it does from a TCM perspective

Chinese medicine sees health as qi moving freely and each organ system in rhythm with the others and with the seasons. Sound is vibration, and vibration moves qi. By bringing tuned intervals and color to the Back Shu points, the Musical Spine is designed to:

  • Encourage the smooth flow of qi along the spine and back
  • Bring the organ systems back into rhythm with one another and with the season
  • Calm the Shen, so the mind and heart can settle
  • Support the Tai Yang, the body's outer layer of protection
  • Give stored emotion a gentle way to move through the spirit points

The experience is often described as deeply relaxing, grounding, and light.
