Spirulina vs. Chlorella: Which Algae Is Right for You?

By now we've covered spirulina's protein profile and chlorella's chlorophyll density individually. This week, let's put them side by side, because understanding their differences is what allows you to use both intentionally rather than treating "algae" as one interchangeable category.

Biological Differences

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a cyanobacterium, technically closer to bacteria than to plants, despite photosynthesizing like one. It has no true cell wall in the way plants do, which makes its nutrients readily digestible without processing.

Chlorella is a true eukaryotic green algae, more closely related to plants, with a tough cellulose-based cell wall that must be mechanically cracked during processing for the nutrients to be bioavailable, as we covered last week.

Nutritional Comparison

Category Spirulina Chlorella Protein Higher (55-70% dry weight) Lower but still substantial (roughly 50-60%) Chlorophyll Present, moderate Exceptionally high Phycocyanin Signature antioxidant pigment Not present Cell wall None (naturally digestible) Tough, requires processing Iron High Moderate Typical color Blue-green Deep green

Neither is objectively "better." They're complementary, which is exactly why so many algae products, Energy Bits included, combine both rather than choosing one.

The TCM Framework: Two Tools, Two Purpose

If we're translating this into TCM food-therapy language, spirulina's higher protein and phycocyanin content lean more toward building Blood and Qi, nourishing substance and sustained energy. Chlorella's chlorophyll density and binding properties lean more toward supporting the Liver's role in smooth Qi flow and clearing, the "housekeeping" side of the body's function.

Practically, this means someone who is primarily fatigued, under-muscled, or recovering from a depleting period (postpartum, illness, extreme stress) might lean more heavily on spirulina's building properties. Someone dealing more with sluggishness, environmental exposure concerns, or a general sense of needing to "clear out" might lean toward chlorella. Most people benefit from both, which is the rationale behind combination products.

Taste and Practical Differences

For what it's worth clinically and personally: spirulina has a stronger, more distinctly "oceanic" or grassy taste, which is part of why encapsulated tablets (rather than loose powder) have become popular, they sidestep the flavor issue entirely. Chlorella has a milder taste but a more intensely saturated color, which is why it's sometimes used as a natural coloring agent in food products.

Which Should You Choose?

If you had to pick just one:

  • Choose spirulina if your primary goals are protein density, sustained energy, and antioxidant support via phycocyanin.

  • Choose chlorella if your primary interest is chlorophyll density and the binding/clearing properties we'll cover in week 17.

  • Choose both (the more common approach) if you want the broadest nutritional coverage, which is the logic behind most combination algae tablets on the market.

A Note on Research Volume

It's worth noting that spirulina has a somewhat larger body of published human clinical research than chlorella, particularly around cardiovascular markers (week 13) and metabolic health (week 12). This doesn't mean chlorella is less valuable, only that the research base is younger and still growing. Being precise about which claims are well-supported versus emerging is part of what separates credible algae education from hype.

The Bottom Line

Spirulina and chlorella get lumped together constantly, but they're distinct organisms with distinct strengths; one leaning toward building and sustaining, the other toward supporting clearing and cellular antioxidant load. Understanding that difference doesn't just make you a more informed consumer, it's a genuinely useful lens for tailoring how and why you use algae in the first place.
